Families Moving Forward is a faith based organization of volunteers in Minneapolis, Minnesota that provides temporary emergency shelter, permanent affordable housing and supportive services to low income families with children. In collaboration with 40 local congregations and thousands of volunteers, we provide hope to homeless families with children by:
- Providing temporary emergency shelter
- Supporting our former shelter families with
- continued advocacy and education
- Developing affordable rental housing for families.
Families Moving Forward serves only families with children - our greatest concern is for the damage that homelessness causes in the children.
Families Moving Forward is free to the families - we want to help our families save their resources for the upfront expense of their next home or for the future needs of their family.
Families Moving Forward makes the greatest possible use of donated space and volunteer services - this helps us to serve more families and more children

Shannon and her two kids came to Families Moving Forward after she lost her job and was evicted from their apartment in south Minneapolis. While Shannon stayed at FMF she received assistance in finding a new job and housing. Shannon's children were able to remain enrolled at their own school throughout their stay. Shannon and her family moved into their own apartment in Bloomington after being with FMF for 54 days.
